Swains Islands in American Samoa picks Representative

Alexander Jennings, a descendant of the first settler on Swains island, Eli Jennings, has been selected for a third term as the island's non voting representative in the American Samoa House of Representatives.

Mr Jennings, was uanimously selected by Swains voters at an open meeting held over the weekend at the Election Office in Tafuna.

There was no other person nominated for the position.

Under local law, all adult permanent residents of Swains Island who are U.S. citizens or nationals participate in the selection of their representative.

Mr Jennings is currently chairman of the House Commerce Committee.

There are less than five people currently living on Swains.
