Indonesian police investigate whether torture video is authentic

Indonesian police say they are investigating whether or not a video allegedly showing Indonesian soldiers torturing indigenous Papuans is authentic.

A Hong Kong-based human rights group has uploaded the graphic video on its website, and says the footage has been shot recently.

The video shows a smouldering stick being applied to one man's genitals as he is being questioned over the whereabouts of an arms cache.

A report in the Sydney Morning Herald said the video appears to have been taken with a mobile phone by one of the interrogators, who speak Indonesian with Javanese and Ambonese accents.

The victims speak in the Papuan dialect Lani, strongly suggesting the video was filmed in Puncak Jaya.
