The Fiji government says consultations have begun on a proposed national identification card.
Fiji's Permanent Secretary for Defence, National Security and Immigration Jale Fotofili says the government believes there is a need for such a card.
He says a presentation has been made to the Prime Minister on the issue, and Commodore Frank Bainimarama has accepted the idea despite other issues pertaining to its implementation.
Mr Fotofili says the ID cards will expedite the elections to within a day.
The Fij Live website says the card would contain critical personal information and will assist in police investigations, enhance passenger profiling clearance, detection of illicit activities, and facilitate public service output.
It could be used for identification with the Land Transport Authority, educational enrolment, and the Fiji National Provident Fund.
