New Zealand Niueans to get new community centre in Auckland

2:45 pm on 21 October 2010

The Niuean community in South Auckland will soon have its own multi-purpose community centre.

The Vaka Manukau Niue Community Trust hopes the centre will keep children off the street and prevent anti-social behaviour.

The project was first proposed seven years ago, but didn't go ahead because of a lack of funding.

But the chairman of the Community Trust, Walter Togiamua, says it's happening this time and the plan has a lot of support.

"We are looking to have more consultation within the community and there is a huge interest and the support is greatly there not only by the Niuean community but also the community in general."

Mr Togiamua says he hopes to start building soon.
