9:34 am on 22 October 2010

The Solomon Islands government is working to introduce a social profiling bill, which will see information stored in a central database for use by the state.

The Prime Minister Danny Philip says the government will bring in the Demographic and Coding Bill to ensure the compilation of all relevant and appropriate data of every citizen.

The Solomon Times reports the data could be used for intelligence gathering and fighting crime, for security, and to monitor the movement of citizens.

The Prime Minister says it could also be used for economic and social planning, and in the event of natural disasters.
