PNG Kumuls looking long-term ahead of Four Nations debut

Papua New Guinea's coach is acutely aware his side are being given no chance in their opening Four Nations rugby league clash against Australia tomorrow.

But Stanley Gene says that wont deter the Kumuls side from standing up to the star-studded Kangaroos side at Parramatta Stadium.

Stanley Gene has named 13 local players in his squad, which features just one regular NRL player, while his opposite Tim Sheens has been able to call on the likes of dual-international Lote Tuqiri as cover for injured star Jarryd Hayne.

Gene says he knows the odds aren't in PNG's favour but says his team can only improve with more matches at international level.

"We need time and only time will tell but for me the main goal is the World Cup games. These games don't come in better for us because it's a stepping stone for us but saying that we are not going to go up there and make the numbers. The boys are going to work 200 percent."

The Kumuls Kangaroos clash will be preceded by a one-off international between Samoa and Tonga.
