A Papua New Guinea policeman in Popondetta has been arrested following the shooting of a 15-year-old who had been held in police custody.
The Post Courier newspaper reports Provincial police commander Chief Superintendent, Micah Anaiwe, as saying the policeman is alleged to have gone into a holding cell and shot the suspect many times.
Chief Superintendent Anaiwe says the 15 year-old was in police custody following the stabbing of a Chinese store manager during a robbery at a supermarket in Popondetta.
He says reports say the policeman had allegedly been drinking with owners of the supermarket before the shooting incident.
Chief Superintendent Anaiwe also admitted this is the second time a shooting involving a policemen in the province has happened.
He says a suspect arrested last month by two policemen was taken to a nearby creek and shot.
He says one of the officers later decided to help the suspect.
Chief Superintendent Anaiwe says investigations into that shooting are continuing.
