Forum says report on Fiji leadership no longer necessary

2:37 pm on 2 November 2010

The Pacific Islands Forum says a section on Fiji was not included in a report on Pacific leadership because it was unnecessary.

The report, looking at leadership practice against the Forum principles of good leadership, found the region's leaders generally respect their laws and systems of government but there is a growing dominance of the executive over the legislature.

It says the Fiji report has been censored and is excluded from the book project.

Dr Steven Ratuva from the Centre for Pacific Studies in Auckland wrote the Fiji section and says it may not have been the right time to look at leadership in Fiji.

The Forum's Director of Political Governance and Security, Rick Nimmo, says a report on Fiji was not necessary because the country no longer adheres to the Forum principles of good leadership.
