Fiji's interim prime minister, Commdore Frank Bainimarama, says the dirty politics of the past have destroyed the sugar industry.

According to FBC News, Commodore Bainimarama has urged stakeholders to work with government to help revive the industry.

He was speaking at the opening of the Ra Provincial Council meeting where he urged the people of Ra to plant more sugar cane and use up unutilised land.

Commodore Bainimarana, who has been the interim sugar minister for the past two years, has called on landowners in the Ra Province to lease out their land.

Returns for farmers have recently been poor and mill upgrades have been unsuccessful.
