The Fiji National Farmers Union says farmers should be compensated for massives losses they've suffered as a result of a failure to crush cane at sugar mills.
The call was made in a letter to the Sugar Cane Growers Council last month and published on the Fiji Labour Party website.
The Union's general secretary and Labour leader, Mahendra Chaudhry, says cane growers have lost millions because of negligence by the Fiji Sugar Corporation to operate its four mills efficiently.
Mr Chaudhry proposes that farmers get compensated by a cash grant for loss of production as a consequence of the prolonged drought.
He has also suggested they get compensated for losses suffered in the 2009 and 2010 seasons because of gross inefficiencies in the milling process.
