PNG's cricket coach questions logic of shutting sports out of proposed new stadium

Papua New Guinea's cricket coach Andy Bichel wants to know why a planned new national sports stadium in Port Moresby won't be capable of hosting AFL and cricket matches.

At a PNG Sports Federation workshop over the weekend it was revealed that the planned 'Multi-Sport' Stadium will be limited to accommodating rugby league, rugby union and football matches.

A former Australian cricket international, Bichel says he's seriously concerned by the lack of consultation with the wider sports community.

He says the proposed stadium will also remove cricket grounds currently used by the Port Moresby Cricket Association which has this season expanded by 25 percent.

Andy Bichel says the decision making process appears to have been influenced by the country's attempts to get a local team into the NRL competition and says any future stadium should benefit all sports, not just a favoured minority.
