PNG acting police commissioners assures force is stable

8:06 am on 12 November 2010

Papua New Guinea's acting police commissioner, Anthony Wagambie, says the force is stable and united despite the government's sacking of commissioner, Gari Baki.

Mr Wagambie stepped in after Mr Baki was dumped, reportedly for misleading the government over the need for nearly four million US dollars to fund policing operations around the LNG sites in Hela province.

Mr Wagambie says police deployments to the major project sites, such as the LNG development, will remain intact under the current arrangements.

The sacking of Mr Baki comes after years of infighting at the top of the PNG police hierarchy.
