CNMI lawmakers face spending caps on vehicles and other perks

The Northern Marianas lawmakers, who're exempted from the cuts to work hours they have instituted for government workers, are to have limits placed on their taxpayer funded vehicle leases and other subsidies.

A bill putting caps on the amount they can spend on these items has been passed and signed into law.

Representative Frederick Deleon Guerrero says placing a monthly ceiling on cell phone and vehicle lease or rental charges incurred by lawmakers is one way of reducing government spending.

He also recommends eliminating the use of taxpayers' money to pay the utility costs of the governor, lieutenant governor, the Senate president and the House speaker.
