The Commonwealth Utilities Corporation in the Northern Marianas says it's on target to make a multi million dollar loss and this is why it needs to increase its base rate for electricity.

The utility says without the increase it won't be able to provide reliable power to its customers.

The Corporation is now petitioning the Commonwealth Public Utilities Commission to allow the increase as of April next year.

The utility says it will continue to provide a subsidised rate for low income customers.
