China does not want to replace NZ and Australia in Fiji - academic

An academic studying Fiji-China relations says China does not have a calculated strategy to replace traditional players in Fiji like New Zealand and Australia.

Auckland University political scientist Dr Jian Yang has just completed a study of Fiji-China relations.

He says Fiji's interim leader Commodore Frank Bainimarama is more intent on hyping up Fiji ties with China while China tries to balance its relations with Fiji on the one hand and valued relationships with New Zealand and Australia on the other.

"Beijing will try not to sabotage Australia and New Zealand's interests and policy towards Fiji so China has been careful not to move in fast in security areas because that will strengthen concerns for Australia and New Zealand."
