The Solomon Islands Member of Parliament for Baegu-Asifola Toswell Kaua has died after a long illness.

The Solomon Islands Broadcasting Corporation reports Mr Kaua served extensively as a school teacher and later as a public servant, making his way up through the ranks to be the Secretary to the Prime Minister and Cabinet before resigning and successfully contesting the 2006 national elections.

The 63 year-old was serving his second term as the member for Baegu/Asifola when he died.

He is survived by his wife Alice Kaua, three children and grandchildren.

The Opposition leader, Steve Abana, has paid tribute to Mr Kaua's valuable contribution to the country in both the public service and politics.
