Wellington's Tokelauans welcome Faafoi election

Tokelauan community leaders in Wellington are proud of New Zealand's newest member of Parliament, the country's first MP of Tokelauan descent.

The Labour Party's Kris Faafoi has been elected to represent the Mana electorate, north of Wellington, following a by-election on Saturday caused by the retirement of the party's former MP, Luamanuvao Winnie Laban.

A leader from the community group, Te Umiumiga a Tokelau Hutt Valley, Henry Joseph, says he's happy and supportive of the win.

"It's a new stepping stone. It's getting the young people more involved in politics and getting the issues that are of interest for our community as well as the Pacific Islands. And I think it's pretty encouraging."

And Kris Faafoi says he is proud to be New Zealand's first MP of Tokelauan descent.
