Extra security ahead of sentencing of Solomon's Fisheries Minister

11:28 am on 29 November 2010

Police in Solomon Islands will be stepping up security in Honiara tomorrow when the Fisheries Minister, Jimmy Lusibaea, is expected to appear in court for sentencing.

The Deputy Police Commissioner, Walter Kola, says the extra police numbers follow threats of a riot.

Solomon Island Broadcasting says Lusibaea has pleaded guilty to a count of unlawful wounding of another person and one count of assaulting a police officer in the execution of his duties.

The charges relate to an attack in September 2000 when Lusibaea shot an already unconscious man in each knee and then assaulted a Police Officer at the National Referral Hospital.
