American Samoa starts week-long HIV/AIDS programme

4:39 pm on 29 November 2010

World Aids Day will be marked in American Samoa by a week-long programme of events focussing on HIV/AIDs.

World Aids Day is officially December 1st but American Samoa will begin its week long programme today with a prayer service.

AIDS has claimed the lives of nine people in the territory but nearly all contracted the disease off-island and returned home to die.

The Health Department says there are currently three people with HIV/AIDs in the territory.

The Department's health educator for the HIV/Aids program, Mateaki Utufiti, says their target group is young people.

Mr Utufiti says more people are now being tested for the disease than in the past.

He credits this to the community core group for HIV/AIDs which consists of church pastors, teachers, traditional leaders and health officials.

"They go out to outreach programmes and they have a lot of activities scheduled every year."
