American Samoa airport lights vandalised

1:27 pm on 1 December 2010

Airport runway lights at American Samoa's Tafuna Airport have been vandalised.

The lights are part of the airport's medium intensity approach system installed by the Federal Aviation Administraiton.

The FAA resident director, Leaoina Smitty Lutu, says some of the lights are badly twisted.

He says the damage puts people's lives in danger because pilots rely on the lights during bad weather.

The acting airport manager, Maiava Fidelis Leota, says he doesn't want to jump to conclusions before finding out the cause of the damage.
