Fiji eye up Oceania Hockey gold on home turf

Fiji say they're ready to challenge for the title at this year's Oceania Pacific Cup hockey tournament which begins in Suva tomorrow.

A New Zealand Barbarians side claimed last year's title, while teams from Papua New Guinea, Australia and Samoa are also competing.

The Fijian captain Shaun Corrie says the tournament has helped to raise the standard of play in the Pacific in the last couple of years and he now feels the home side are capable of claiming the title.

"The New Zealanders and Australians play a different type of game to what we've played. We get to only play them once - we rely a whole lot on the internet to watch overseas teams play. It's good to actually play against them. The first year we set targets at a medal of bronze and last year we got that -this is the third year and we're gunning for the gold this year."
