Tonga king appoints interim speaker

Tonga's King has appointed a new Interim Speaker of the Legislative Assembly and is calling for nominations for a Prime Minister Designate.

Matangi Tonga reports King George Tupou V appointed Lord Tupou as the new Interim Speaker yesterday.

Lord Tupou is one of the King's four law lords, and a former Minister of Justice and Attorney General, and a former judge.

The caretaker Prime Minister Dr Feleti Sevele says a new Prime Minister will be known in about two weeks.

The Supervisor of Elections Pita Vuki is expected to hand the results of the Writ of Election to the King's Lord Chamberlain, Viella Tupou, today.
