PM's referral to Leadership Tribunal a long time coming, says Transparency

Transparency International Papua New Guinea says the expected appearance of the Prime Minister before a Leadership Tribunal has been a long time coming.

The Public Prosecutor, Jim Wala Tamati, has stated his intention in three days' time to launch a tribunal into Sir Michael Somare's alleged misconduct in office.

Mr Tamati says he intends to make a request to the Chief Justice to appoint a Tribunal relating to an Ombudsman inquiry into alleged improprieties over Sir Michael's financial statements dating back 20 years.

TI PNG's Lawrence Stephens says it's taken two years for the referral to reach the Tribunal stage.

"The unfortunate facts about our legal system are that it tends to be extremely slow. So referrals to the courts tend to end up in things being tied up for a very long time. Astute leaders can see the opportunity to refer matters to the court and so things are delayed."
