Australia promises mitigation funds to Pacific countries

2:40 pm on 10 December 2010

The Australian government has announced 78 million US dollar of support measures to help Pacific nations threatened by climate change.

The announcement was made by the Australian climate change minister, Greg Combet, at the United Nations climate change conference in the Mexican city of Cancun.

Mr Combet says Australia is fulfilling its commitment made at climate change talks last year to ensure adaptation funding is prioritised to the most vulnerable developing countries.

The foreign minister Kevin Rudd says the funding makes a significant contribution to responding to the needs of small island developing states.
