Call in Tahiti against euro introduction

4:37 pm on 13 December 2010

A small pro-independence party in French Polynesia has spoken out against the idea of adopting the euro as the territory's currency.

The Ia Mana Te Nunaa Party issued a statement after the suggestion by the economic reconversion minister, Teva Rohfritsch, for the euro to be introduced quickly.

The Ia Mana Te Nunaa says the territory is too small to have any leverage and should therefore use money that is tied to a basket of currencies.

It warns that French Polynesia could suffer a fate similar to Argentina's when it had decided to peg its currency to the US dollar only to see its money and economy crash.
