Vanuatu MP assaulted in suspected political attack

7:03 pm on 21 December 2010

A Vanuatu member of parliament, David Ariasu, has been assaulted near Parliament House.

Our correspondent says according to eyewitnesses, a group of people believed to be government supporters pulled him out of his rental car and started punching him.

They say Mr Ariasu received minor injuries.

Mr Ariasu was elected two years ago as a member of the People's Democratic Party of the prime minister, Sato Kilman.

He was one the six government backbenchers who lst week joined the opposition bloc of the former prime minister, Edward Natapei, to lodge a motion no confidence against Mr Kilman.

The six MPs were unhappy with what they said was an unfair sharing of the ministerial portfolios by Mr Kilman.
