Rifts widen in PNG governing party

11:46 am on 4 January 2011

The Highlands bloc within Papua New Guinea's ruling National Alliance Party appears to be widening rifts within the government ahead of an expected opposition no confidence motion in a week's time.

PNG's Government must reconvene on January the 11th to elect a new governor general.

The Post Courier newspaper is reporting the sacked Deputy Prime Minister, Don Polye, is refusing to take up his new portfolio - Foreign Affairs and Immigration.

The Secretary General of the National Alliance Highlands Bloc, Nathan Piari, has accused the provincial governors of Enga and the Southern Highlands of influencing the prime minister to sack his deputy.
