Plans are underway for the burial of a Fiji soldier who was killed in Afghanistan on New Years Day while serving in the British Army.

Private Joseva Vatubua, died in an explosion while targeting enemy positions in Helmand Provine with the 5th Battalion of the Royal Regiment of Scotland.

The Fiji Village website reports that his mother Raijeli Vatubua spoke to her son early on New Year's morning before he went out on patrol.

The website says the family is still coming to terms with his loss.

Private Vatubua grew up in Fiji and joined the British army in 2007.

The British High Commissioner in Suva Mac McLachlan visited his family this afternoon to pass on his condolences.

He says the soldier was a great soldier and sportsman and will be sorely missed by everyone who knew him.

The date of repatriation of Private Vatubua's body to Fiji is yet to be confirmed.
