Four of the eight high risk prisoners who escaped from a jail in Vanuatu have now been recaptured, but Correctional Services is appealing for help in apprehending the remaining escapees.

Three corrections staff members have now been suspended in relation to last week's breakout at Port Vila's jail.

Correctional Services say correct operating procedures were not followed and there is an assumption the staff members may have made a deal with the prisoners.

The services' director Johnny Marango says the remaining prisoners, who were imprisoned for crimes including murder, theft, assault and rape are believed to still be in the Port Vila area

"They are dangerous, we're still looking for them and we are appealing to the community leaders and the chiefs to assist to try to recapture them."

Johnny Marango says the suspended corrections staff members could be prosecuted depending on the outcome of police investigations.
