The American Samoan Governor Togiola Tulafono has suggested that Manu'a consider setting up a company to produce bottled water to sell to the main island of Tutuila.
Speaking at the opening of a new water supply system for the villages of Ta'u and Faleasao, the governor said the territory was spending millions of dollars to buy bottled water from China, the Philippines and Malaysia because the three local bottling companies cannot meet local demand.
The new system supplies water from two wells to a 100,000 gallon tank from which it is piped to homes in Tau and Faleasao.
The project has taken six years to complete.
The Director of the American Samoa Environmental Protection Agency Dr. To'afa Vaiaga'e says the water from the Ta'u wells is so clean it doesn't need chlorination.
