PNG gears up for election of new governor-general

7:30 am on 10 January 2011

Papua New Guinea politicians are gearing up for a parliamentary meeting called for tomorrow to elect a governor-general.

This comes after the Supreme Court ruled last month that the previous election of a governor general was unconstitutional.

The sitting also come amid a political crisis.

Our correspondent, Alex Rheeney, says it's unclear who will be chosen.

"Sir Paulias Matane has actually indicated publicly that he would like to be re-nominated for the top post. But then we also have the other candidates such as Ronald Rimbau, Sir Pato Kakaraya and Sir Makena Geno who were unsuccessful when the vote was held in June."
