Quake strikes off New Caledonia

The United States Geological Survey says a 7.3 magnitude earthquake has struck off the New Caledonia islands.

The quake, which struck at 3:16 a.m. was very shallow at a depth of 7.2 kilometres was located 124 kilometres northeast of Tadine in the Loyalty Islands.

The Pacific Tsunami warning Center said the quake had not triggered a widespread tsunami but could cause a local one.
