French Polynesian test veterans keen on safety assessment of Hao

The French Polynesian nuclear test veterans organisation, Moruroa e tatou, has expressed surprise that the local government has not been involved in a food safety study in Hao.

This comes as the French defence ministry has offered to study conditions on the atoll, which used to be a base during the three decades of nuclear weapons testing.

The head of Moruroa e tatou, Roland Oldham, says there had been repeated calls for an independent assessment.

"Our government is not very concerned with the real problem, I mean environment or contamination, if the people are still safe as far as health issues are concerned. Our government - as long as the French government gives them a bit of money - some way to buy its silence, they go on with that."
