Tautua Samoa says MP listing was ploy

6:48 pm on 18 January 2011

The president of the Tautua Samoa Party, Afualo Dr Wood Salele, says it was a ploy aimed at the ruling party to list six candidates who are independent members of parliament.

It is illegal for MPs to change allegiances during a parliamentary term.

Afualo says the politicians in question were not asked and he takes responsibility for putting their names forward.

Nothing is official, he says, as the MPs concerned have not registered as Tautua candidates, which they can do until February the 4th.

The speaker Tolofuaivalelei Falemoe Leiataua says they broke the law in declaring themselves candidates for the March elections, but Afualo says no law was broken.
