Call on Solomons government to explain Lusibaea release

3:14 pm on 19 January 2011

The Premier of Guadalcanal province is calling on the Solomon Islnds government to explain the reasons for the release of MP Jimmy Lusibaea, less than two months after he was sentenced on assault charges.

The Parole Board says the former fisheries minister was released on licence in compliance with legislation, and denies suggestions pressure was applied to recommend his release.

"But the Guadalcanal premier Anthony Veke says ordinary people are confused about the release, and may believe he was granted amnesty for his crimes which were committed during the ethnic tensions."

The Premier says national leaders should reveal the grounds for the release.

To actually explain this issue so that our people in Guadalcanal can get better information as to why he was released, surprisingly because he just stayed for a few weeks in the prison and then they have released him.

Anthony Veke says ordinary people will think Lusibaea has received favourable treatment because of his position in government.
