Officers from American Samoa's Department of Safety and Department of Health are out enforcing a new smoking ban in all enclosed areas, both public and private.

The restrictions wer approved by the legislature in October and came into force yesterday.

The Deputy Commissioner of Public Safety, Leseiau Laumoli, says officers have been briefed on the law change and penalties that include fines.

"Well our officers are out on the field. And the Department of Health officers are also out on the field. And we will enforce it inside the employment areas, government properties, buses and taxis, as it all states by the law."

Leseiau Laumoli says enforcement staff can expect further training sessions in the coming weeks.
