The authorities in New Caledonia estimate that it will take three months to repair the road damage caused by Cyclone Vania last week.
The storm, which also destroyed crops, has affected the main road north out of Noumea.
Over the Col de la Pirogue, which is the pass between the capital and the international airport, speed limits will remain cut and passing lanes closed.
According to the local newspaper, total cyclone damage is estimated at about 11 million US dollars.
