NZ coffee importer wants to boost Samoa cash economy

8:07 am on 24 January 2011

The owner of a business importing Samoan-grown coffee into New Zealand says they hope the scheme will help grow the country's cash economy.

C1 Espresso is working with Women in Business and local families in Samoa to grow coffee for the New Zealand market.

Sam Crofskey says while Samoa is poor, there's no drought, and an abundance of food

"That access to market doesn't exist, and we really want to provide that. The access to a cash economy is unavoidable now, to send your kids to university, or play to fly to New Zealand, all these things are difficult without access to a market, which is what we are trying to provide through the coffee."
