Samoa boy drowns in high seas

7:03 pm on 25 January 2011

Police in Samoa say a young boy was swept away while swimming in high seas at Vailele, near Apia.

Assistant police commissioner, Leaupepe Fatu Pula, says the boy and four others decided to go for a swim despite forecasts of rough seas and waves likely to reach up to four metres.

Another boy who'd been swept away was rescued but two days of searching has failed to find the missing boy.

Leaupepe says when people fail to heed warnings, there's bound to be trouble.

A third person from the group of five remains in a critical condition at the National Hospital.
