An in-depth assessment of the effects of Tropical Cyclone Wilma on American Samoa is underway.
A preliminary impact report was carried out in the territory yesterday by a team from the American Samoa Department of Homeland Security and the Territorial Emergency management Coordinating Office.
It studied the impact of the cyclone on the territory's key infrastructure, buildings, housing and businesses.
But poor weather hampered efforts to compile sufficient data to allow the governor, Togiola Tulafono, to seek a national disaster declaration from Washington.
In a media statement Togiola says an in-depth assessment will evaluate the property damage claims of families who are currently being housed in local shelters, damage to farms and the impact of flooding.
