Papuan Governor takes bid for re-election to court

The governor of Indonesia's Papua province, Barnabas Suebu, has mounted a legal challenge against a law that prevents him seeking re-election later this year.

Based on regulations under 2001's Papuan Special Autonomy Law and the 2004 Regional Governance Law, the Papuan General Elections Commission has barred Barnabas from running for a third term in office.

However, in a judicial review being heard by the Constitutional Court, Governor Suebu's lawyers are arguing that the laws do not apply in his situation because his two terms weren't consecutive.

His legal team is also arguing that the cap on two terms came into efect after Mr Suebu had served his first term and shouldn't be applied retrospectively.
