8:19 pm on 1 February 2011

Police in Solomon Islands have confirmed they're investigating a firearms incident in the Burns Creek area on Saturday night but say two MPs reported to be the targets were not at the scene.

The opposition, which is locked in a battle for MP's with Danny Philips coalition, claims the government was behind the threat against the member for North West Guadalcanal, Bodo Dettke, and MP for East Honiara, Douglas Ete.

Both men have moved over from the government benches in recent weeks.

Police are appealing for witnesses to the incident which happened at 10 o'clock at the intersection of Custom Garden Drive and the Prince Phillip Highway.

Detectives believe a white station wagon taxi was involved.

The police say the ministers said to be involved were at a different location at the time of the shooting.
