Unlawful assembly charges against former Fiji prime minister dropped

8:08 pm on 2 February 2011

Charges laid against the Fiji Labour Party leader Mahendra Chaudhry and five others for alleged breaches of the public emergency regulations have been withdrawn.

The Fiji Village website reports that after assessing the charges the Director of Public Prosecutions has decided they be withdrawn due to insufficient evidence.

Mr Chaudhry was charged in October last year with breaching unlawful assembly regulations after reports he held meetings in Rakiraki with sugar cane farmers.
