Tough finance officials needed to enforce ban on some spending in Marshalls Government

A halt in spending on travel and office supplies by government agencies should help to curb a huge shortfall in the General Fund, but only if its strictly enforced.

The secretary of finance, Alfred Alfred Junior, says the move is necessary as they are projecting a deficit of 12-million US dollars in the General Fund, if the current spending and revenue levels continue.

The General Fund is already facing a 3 million dollar deficit for the current financial year.

Our correspondent, Giff Johnson, says hopefully, finance officials will be tough.

"The real test of this, is whether people in the Ministry of Finance can say no. Because if they can enforce spending limits, sure it could have some impact because the cut off is aimed at travel and office supplies, which are both fairly substantial budget items. So provided they stick to what they said, then maybe they can cut back."
