Fiji's former president and late Tui Vuda, Ratu Josefa Iloilo, began his final journey from Suva to his home in Viseisei this morning.

Fiji Live reports that the president Ratu Epeli Nalatikau and the interim prime minister, Commodore Frank Bainimarama, with other senior military officers, led the cortege, with Ratu Josefa's body on a gun carriage, through the streets of Suva to Government House.

Ratu Josefa's body was then transferred to a hearse and is expected to arrive in Viseisei at about four o'clock this afternoon.

The Tui Vuda's body will be guarded by soldiers and navy personnel at the village until Thursday.

Ratu Josefa became president in 2000 after his predecessor, Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara, was deposed by the George Speight-led coup.

He himself was forced out of office after the 2006 military coup but restored to the presidency the following year.
