Budget confusion in French Polynesia

1:32 pm on 23 February 2011

There is confusion over the state of the French Polynesian budget which the opposition passed at the weekend against the will of the president Gaston Tong Sang.

However, he has held a news conference and invoked a clause in the statute which he says means that he can stop the process because the budget seized by the opposition was an amended version.

According to him, all amendments need to have his approval.

The opposition, which had the support of 43 of the assembly's 57 members, says after Mr Tong Sang had left the assembly last Saturday night, the budget process was outside his control.

Tahitipresse says the validity of the claims is to be tested by lawyers.
