Tahoeraa hits out at French Polynesia president's budget claims

3:25 pm on 23 February 2011

French Polynesia's opposition Tahoeraa Huiraatira Party has hit out at the President Gaston Tong Sang for suggesting there were two budgets following the weekend vote by the opposition to approve the document in his absence.

The Tahoeraa says his claim, put forward at a news conference, is a smokescreen likening it to a dictatorship of ignorance and lies.

It says his claims amount to disinformation as the budget approved in the assembly was not altered.

However, he says he invoked a clause in the statute which he says means that he can stop the process because the budget seized by the opposition was an amended version.

The Tahoeraa has challenged Mr Tong Sang, saying there would be nothing political if resigned but rather something vital for the territory.
