The head of a Confucius Institute in New Zealand says learning about the Chinese language and culture is becoming more relevant throughout the Pacific.
A Confucius Institute is being set up at the University of the South Pacific, in Fiji.
The University has signed an agreement with the Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications, who'll implement the agreement on behalf of the headquarters of the Confucius Institute in Beijing.
Nora Yao, the director of the Confucius Institute at the University of Auckland, says understanding China is becoming more pertinent.
"When the China engage more with the rest of the world and at the same time the rest of the world really need to know China more as well right so the Confucius Institute is a platform to help the people to travel from this end to the other end, so we are really like a bridge."
The institute will mostly offer courses in Chinese language and culture.
