Solar power to benefit families in Samoa

12:04 pm on 2 March 2011

More than twenty families on Samoa's island of Savaii who did not have power, now have solar powered electricity from the Electric Power Corporation.

These families were identified through a survey carried out by the Corporation in 2008, for households located more than 2 kilometres from the electrical grid.

The households will undergo basic training on how to install and maintain the solar energy sets, as they are expected to install them in their own homes.

The Electric Power Corporation is this week carrying out inspections on the installation of these systems.

Samoa's Government received the 200 solar power home system sets from the China Electric Equipment Group following the September 2009 tsunami.

The first group of solar power home system sets was distributed last year to families in Upolu.
