Fishing group keen to open American Samoa's Manu'a to commercial fishing

The Western Pacific Regional Fisheries Management Council says the restoration of commercial fishing grounds around American Samoa's Manu'a would be welcomed during the current slow economic period.

The zone was ruled off limits when the Rose Atoll Monument was established.

The boundaries of the monument overlap waters previously opened to commercial fishermen.

During its meeting in Pago Pago next week the Council will decide how toaddress the issue and what type of fishing activities will be allowed in waters surrounding the monument.

A council official, Lauvao Steve Haleck, says they want to make sure the rules don't remove local traditions.
